THE TOWN - SHOIPPONG, SIGHT SEEING, EATING AND NIGHT LIFE SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE is located in the central plateau state of Mexico known as Guanajuato and enjoys a continiuos CALENDAR OF EVENTS. Due to its central location, it is within driving distance of many cities and places of interest in Mexico. It is about 3 hours drive from Mexico City, Guadalajara or San Luis Potosi and even less to other major points of interest like Gueretaro (1 hr), Leon 1 ½ hrs, Celaya ¾ hr, city of Guanajuato 1 hr. SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE is considered unique in its preserved colonial structures (founded in 1523 and the whole of downtown is a national monument, declared as such in 1926), cobblestone roads, bull ring (with bull fights), village-like lifestyle with all the modern conveniences and active community. It presently has over 80,000 inhabitants (some estimate over 90,000) and is considered Mexico's premier artist's and craftsmen's community of both Mexicans and foreigners. The estimate on the year round foreigner population to be over 5,000, with hundreds more during the on-seasons of the year. You can find activity in the central part of the town or a unique relaxing and peaceful since of being in the residential or outlying areas. Since the WEATHER in San Miguel de Allende is never too cold or too hot, there are winter visitors as well as spring and summer visitors, and lets not forget the weekend visitors form the major metropolitan areas of Mexico. There are ample things to see just by simply aimlessly walking around the town, hanging around the main plaza (commonly called the "Jardin"), hiking in the surrounding areas, or shopping from store to store. For those that want to dine out, you can find many fine dining restaurants, so you don't have to keep going back to the same one, unless you want to! There are authentic cuisine of several styles, including Mexican , Oriental, French, Spanish and U.S. Since the town is built on the upper, middle, lower and area surrounding of a plateou, it affords many opportunities for unique viewing of the town, its surrounding areas and distant mountains. It is common to watch the rain roll in at a distance from the east or the west and watch the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.
