CALENDAR OF EVENTS IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE FOR THE
YEAR
Many of the holidays in Mexico and San Miguel de
Allende are religious (Catholic Church) in origin and intention.
A city with six patron saints and dozens of churches, San Miguel hosts a full
calendar of religious festivals throughout the year.
January 1(*)
New Year's Day (Official Holiday)
January 6
The Saint Kings Day (Three Kings Day)
Mexico's equivalent of Christmas Day when gifts and a special bread known as
"Rosca" are given to commemorate the arrival of the three wise men
/kings bearing gifts for Jesus Christ. One or more little plastic dolls are
placed into the bread (a flattened round loaf ) and if you get one of the dolls
you are to host a party on February 2nd (The day of the Candelaria"). This
date concludes the Christmas holidays.
January 17
Saint Anthony's Day
For Blessing of Animals in front of the central church (Parroquia). Animals are
reportedly permitted to enter the church for blessing on this date, even though
they do it in front of the church..
January 17: Feast Day of de San Antonio de Abad is a
religious holiday during which the Catholic Church allows
January 21
Birth of General Ignacio Allende y Unzaga
Celebration with civic acts and a military parade in honor of Insurgent
Ignacio Allende (national hero of independence).
January 24
Departure of Religious devotes (Pilgrims-Perigrinos) to San Juan de Los Lagos
February Carnaval
This is an official Mexican holiday that starts a five-day
celebration of the "libido" before the Catholic lent.
Beginning the weekend before Lent, "Carnaval" is celebrated in San
Miguel de Allende with less activity (playing with colored paper eggs in the
street) than other towns but there is the potential for parades, floats and
dancing in the streets.
Dates change slightly 2009: Feb 19-24; 2010: Feb 11-16.

Holly Week (Semana Santa) ( in March or April, depending upon the day count by
the chruch)
It starts with the contest of the Altars Virgin of Dolores and completes
with Saint Friday in a sole funeral procession of the Saint Burial.
Although not an official holiday, almost all the country takes the whole week
and the Monday following to go out-of-town. Those that can not afford to go the
whole week, go Wednesday through Sunday. Those that can't go at all (do to
economic or other reasonsissues) make a holiday of it in their town. Most all
the resort and beach areas of Mexico are filled to their maxium capacity during
this period of time.

Traditional y popular parade of the "Los Locos" where
everyone that wants to may participate with a costums and mask and which travels
through the main streets of the town. There are allegoric (decorated) cars and
trucks, music bands and lots of funs events.

June 24: Saint John the Baptist Day is celebrated
with religious festivities, fairs, and popular jokes connected to getting dunked
in water.

The town's biggest bash is San Miguel Arcángel, a celebration honoring
the town's chief patron saint.

Día de la Raza: This day celebrates Columbus' arrival to the Americas, and
the historical origins of the Mexican race. Also referred to as Columbus Day

End of Daylight Saving Time
November 1 & 2
All Souls Day - Day of the Dead (Día de todos los Santos): This an
important Mexican holiday that merges Pre-Columbian beliefs and modern
Catholocism. Europe's All Saints' Day and the Aztec worship of the dead
contribute to these two days that honor Mexico's dead.

International Jazz Festival

Feast of Mexico's Patron Saint: Virgin of Guadalupe
December 16-24
"Posadas" (Christmas carling and dinners each day). This celebrates
Joseph and Mary's search for shelter in Bethlehem with candlelight
processions that end at various nativity scenes. Las Posadas traditionally
continues through January 6.

On this day, people pull practical jokes on each other.
It is equivalent to the U.S. version of April Fools Day.
Don't lend money and be aware of jokes.
The person pulling the joke will say ¡Inocente palomita...!
(equivalent to saying April Fools!).
